New Year's Eve Great Sardine and Maple Leaf Drop, Eastport, Maine
Bill created the newest versions of the Great Sardine and Maple Leaf in 2006 for the Tides Institute and Museum of Art. The Sardine is an 8 foot replica of a Clupea harengus, (Atlantic herring), painted on canvas stretched over a wooden frame. Every New Year's Eve, since 2004, the larger than life-sized Great Sardine and Maple Leaf are lowered from the third floor of the Tides Institute and Museum of Art into Bank Square, the center of downtown Eastport, Maine, to the cheers of 300-400+ revelers. Being right on the international border, the Maple Leaf is dropped to celebrate the New Year at 11pm Eastern (or 12 midnight Atlantic Time for Canadian neighbors), while the Sardine is dropped at 12 midnight Eastern Time. The annual event has been featured in the Boston Globe, CNN - Anderson Cooper 360, TripAdvisor, BBC Travel, as well as other media outlets, and newspapers.
